The role of the cornea, sometimes called the “window” of the eye, is to properly focus light so that vision is clear. If the cornea becomes damaged, it cannot carry out its duties, and vision is compromised. In cases of such corneal injury, corneal transplantation may be the solution.
During corneal transplantation, a small, round portion of the cornea is removed and replaced with healthy tissue from a donor cornea. Next, the donor tissue is attached with stitches and left to heal. There are some minimal side effects and risks associated with corneal transplants, but most patients experience outstanding results.
