LASIK

LASIK, which stands for “laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis,” is currently the most common type of laser vision correction. LASIK surgery is a largely safe and effective treatment for a spectrum of common vision problems. The InnoVision Eye Care Center has performed many LASIK operations in the Carlsbad and San Diego areas. LASIK surgery involves two steps designed to permanently alter the shape of the cornea, the transparent tissue covering the front of the eye.

For most patients, LASIK surgery improves the vision enough to eliminate the need for corrective lenses. However, it is important that LASIK candidates understand that all surgeries entail a certain amount of risk. Patients in the San Diego area who are considering LASIK surgery should be counseled on the potential risks and benefits of the surgery so they can make an informed decision. It is also important for those who undergo LASIK surgery to have realistic expectations regarding the results of the procedure.

LASIK Surgery Results

The results of LASIK surgery are remarkable. In the United States, clinical trials for correction of nearsightedness, nearly 100 percent of the patients studied experienced improved natural uncorrected vision after LASIK surgery. Over 95 percent were able to see 20/40 or better, which is the driving standard in the majority of states. With 20/40 vision, patients were able to enjoy life and perform most activities without glasses or contact lenses. More than two-thirds achieved 20/20 vision or better.

Dr. Davies is an accomplished San Diego LASIK surgery expert, having provided LASIK to Carlsbad and San Diego residents for many years. This treatment has given them the freedom to make lifestyle choices that were not available before because of their dependence on contacts or glasses.

Wavefront LASIK Surgery

Wavefront LASIK surgery, provided in the San Diego area by Dr. Davies and his team, is a new LASIK technology recently approved by the FDA. It allows surgeons to tailor the vision correction procedure to each eye. The wavefront technology was derived from a similar technology used to correct the distorted images from the Hubble Space Telescope.

By using a laser and a sensor, the wavefront LASIK surgery method passes a wave of light to the retina, which is refracted back through the pupil and cornea and captured by the sensor. With the data from this process, a three-dimensional image is created that leads to a mathematical formula used to program the laser with the corrections to be made to the cornea. Thus, each wavefront LASIK surgery procedure is unique to the eye it is correcting.

Studies indicate that, whereas conventional LASIK produces 20/20 vision in 80 percent of people, wavefront LASIK surgery produces it in 90 to 94 percent. Wavefront LASIK surgery may not, however, be indicated for people with thin corneas, a condition for which conventional LASIK surgery is more suitable. A free screening at the InnoVision Eye Care Center can determine whether you are a candidate for wavefront LASIK surgery.
